I really enjoyed that audio file and recognized several voices and calls.

It was great hearing W2OY and I hope others upload any conversations that might be available. After reading Herb's excellent article about Mike I now have a new perspective and enjoy just thinking about some of his transmissions that I recall from the 1960s. I visited Mike once with a friend and he was very friendly and a totally different person. We were not invited in to see his shack, but I do recall seeing his 75 meter antenna which had a wire reflector at ground level.

I'm also wondering if anyone remembers K2CKU who they called Depew Mike. He ran relatively low power but always had a strong AM signal in the Clarence area.

Speaking of W2OY, does anyone know what became of his BC-610 and whether it might still be on the air? That transmitter has quite a history behind it.

Lastly, would anyone like to speculate how Mike might have reacted to the FCC dropping the Morse Code requirement for Amateur Radio? I can almost hear his patented CQ lengthened a bit to exclude yet one more group!

I'm glad you enjoyed the audio file.

Mike was a very good friend. I started talking with Mike when I first got on the air back in the mid 50's. I was a school bus rider at the time, but because I was a Class "A" operator, Mike never had a problem talking with me. He would talk to anyone as long as they operated properly.

If you saw Mike's shack you would wonder how he ever put a signal on the air. It was on the upper level of his house, in what looked like a small closet. There were wires all over the place, a true rats nest.

I do remember Depew Mike, I would talk with him often on 75 meter AM. He was also considered to be a Class "A" operator and was an interesting character.

Regarding Mike's BC-610, it was acquired by WA2ABK (Don), who lived just East of Clarence. He took Mike's rig and stripped it for parts I'm sorry to say. It would have been nice if the transmitter was preserved. Don has been a silent key for many years, passing away in the late 80's.

Mike was a great guy, and is truly missed by all of us who knew him well.

Great to hear a few more details about Mike's shack. I would never have imagined that it was in such a small room. It is too bad that the BC-610 transmitter was not kept intact as I'm sure it would have been usable for many years to come.

Yesterday I just recalled that my grandfather, Walter Weber (K2EE), was Mike's teacher at one time. My grandfather was Assistant Professor in Electricity at the State College for Teachers at Buffalo from 1920 through 1948. Prior to that he taught seven years at Seneca Vocational High School where he organized the first radio class in Buffalo.

He authored several books, and earlier today I was absolutely stunned to find the names of several of his books doing a Google Search. Several are available in certain libraries around the country, one can be read online on books.google.com, and one had been scanned by Google and was available as a pdf file download. The books go back to 1915. Technology continues to amaze me.
