This past weekend, one of the most anti amplitude modulation ham radio operators, was spotted operating AM.  Hard to believe, but The Buffalo Kilowatt Bookend Home Office monitored Johnny Shinenolan, sometimes know as "Popeye," signing into the Sunday AWA afternoon AM net.

K2IXJ (Popeye)

All of us here at the Bookend Home Office were very surprised to hear the raspy audio of K2IXJ on AM, considering the fact that he has been monitored on many occasions criticizing the mode and those who operate it.

How unusual, here is the guy who is on record saying that AM is inefficient, takes up too much band space, is old technology, and should be banned by the FCC for use on the amateur bands.  But there he was, wanting to know how his SSB rig was sounding on AM.

Could it be that Popeye ate some contaminated spinach,  or has he finally come to the realization that AM has a place on the ham bands.  One thing for sure, he needs to improve the quality of his audio, whether it be SSB or AM.
